New Mural in Downtown Elizabeth
During this past fall, visitors to Downtown Elizabeth saw a colorful site unfold. A new mural has been installed at the intersection of Plum and Second. Over the last year, the Elizabeth Area Development Corporation (EADC) has hosted fundraisers to help promote and enhance the historic downtown area. The first project is this new mural depicting Elizabeth’s early history and riverfront heritage. Artist Tim Englehardt of Englehardt Designs reimagined Elizabeth’s original bridge crossing and an iconic river steamboat. EADC hopes that this is the first of a series of mural within the community. Additional funding support for this mural was made possible by the Mon River Town Program.

Ekin House |
Ekin House Named Top Preservation Opportunity
For the second year in a row, the Young Preservationists Association have named sites in downtown Elizabeth as part of the annual list of “Top Ten Preservation Opportunities” in southwestern Pennsylvania. This year’s site was the riverfront property known as the Ekin House. Built circa 1840s, this vernacular Greek Revival house was once home to Captain James Ekin, who once operated the prominent boat building industry in Elizabeth as well as served in the Civil War under President Lincoln. The site has been threatened with demolition since 2012, but community members have been able to keep it standing. The current interest is to develop the site as a river-related business or possible expansion of greenspace to the riverfront park.
