APRIL 1

FREE COMMUNITY DINNER - The California United Methodist Church invites the local community to its monthly free dinner on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. Despite the date, church organizers assure neighbors that the invitation to a hot, complimentary meal is no April Fool’s joke. The dinner will be held from 6:00PM to 7:00PM in the Church Social Hall, located at 227 Third Street, across from the Dairy Queen. This month’s featured entrées are chicken and halupki (stuffed cabbage rolls). The main course will be accompanied by a variety of side dishes and desserts provided by dinner attendees, offering a true community-style dining experience. The dinner is open to all members of the public. While donations are accepted to help sustain the program, they are never expected. FOR THE LOVE OF DOGS & COOKIES FUNDRAISER – Event to benefit Mojo’s Wallet and South Hills Pet Rescue will be held on Saturday, April 11 from 11:00AM to 2:30PM at Oddfellow Hall, located at 3684 Finleyville-Elrama Road in Finleyville.   Guests will enjoy a lunch buffet, raffle items, unique creations, artisan Enso Forge and a Cookie Sale. ELECTRONICS RECYCLING EVENT - The Mon-Yough River Valley Rotary Club will sponsor an electronics recycling event April 11 from 10:00AM to 1:00PM at the Herman Mihalich Boat Launch, 1 Monongahela St. in Monessen. There will be restrictions on the number and types of items accepted at the event offered in conjunction with Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling and ProWaste LLC of Belle Vernon.

The following items will be accepted: flat screen and tube televisions, computer towers, computer monitors, computer keyboards, printers and related cables, laptops, e-books, e-readers, fax machines, VCRs, microwave ovens, landline phones, am/fm radios, tape players and turntables. The following items will not be accepted: vacuum sweepers, standalone speakers, carpet scrubbers, large console stereo systems, DVD disks and VCR tapes. A four-item-per-person limit will be enforced. There is no charge for this event, but donations will be accepted to fund projects in the communities served by the Rotary club.

MOTHER'S DAY FUNDRAISER - Monongahela Area Library invites you to celebrate a special woman in your life by adding your photo to our blooming garden wall. Each flower represents a mother, grandmother, sister, teacher or friend who helped you grow and your donation of $10 helps our library grow too. Visit our library between April 13 and May 7 to make your donation and have your photo taken by our library staff (or emailed to us.) CLOTHES 4 U MINISTRY – The Clothes 4 U ministry of the First United Methodist church at 200 State Street Belle Vernon will be open to the public on Tuesdays April 14 and April 28 from 9:00AM to 12:00 noon.  Our spring and summer clothes are being put out for your needs.  We do not sell our clothing   We are open to help anyone in the Mon Valley.   Our clothes are strictly donation in and out.  And thank you to all that help by donating to this ministry

SOUTH HILLS COIN CLUB - The monthly meeting of the South Hills Coin Club will held Tuesday evening April 14, at 7:30 PM at the Bethel Park Municipal building located at 5100 West Library Ave. in Bethel Park, Pa. FOOD BANK - The St. Vincent de Paul-sponsored food bank will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at the parking lot of the St. Mary’s Social Hall (118 Church St., Brownsville) from 11:00 a.m. through noon. The food will be loaded directly into your car by volunteers and participants are asked to remain in their cars.  Families must be registered with Fayette County Community Action Agency in order to receive food.  Anyone who is not registered and lives in the Brownsville Area must complete the required paperwork before receiving their food and those who register on the day of the food bank are not guaranteed a box of food at the site and may have to travel to the food distribution warehouse in Republic.  Families wishing to sign up on the distribution day will need to bring photo identification, the date of birth of each person in the household, and verification of address.

WORLD WAR II: ON THE HOMEFRONT - West Jefferson Hills Historical Society (WJHHS) is pleased to offer society and community members Andrea Maue's free program "World War II: On the Homefront." This informative program will be held at 7:00 PM on April 22, in the Council Chambers of the Jefferson Hills Borough Building.  Expert and collector of World War II Homefront memorabilia, Maue inherited an amazing collection of this period's artifacts from her parents, who were former science teachers. Artifacts from the collection include Remember Pearl Harbor, Victory, Sweetheart Jewelry, and many other items which were circulated to keep the Homefront focused on the war effort. A writer, teacher, and volunteer, Maue will not only honor her late parents’ dedication to this crucial time in American history with her presentation, but her program also promises to enlighten and entertain those curious about daily life in America during World War II.

Vernon Community Presbyterian Church will hold their second annual ‘Hidden Gems Fleatique’ on Saturday April 25 from 8:00AM till 2:00PM.  Featured will be fresh bakery items with many breakfast goodies, handmade crafts, home decor, clothing, jewelry, purses, sporting goods, tools, holiday items, furniture, books, toys, kitchen items and many more.

There will be a basket raffle with baskets coming from our local businesses.   Baskets will include a variety of gift cards, goodies, candles, soap and too many more to tell you. The kitchen will also be open with breakfast items and hot coffee.  They will also have ham BBQs, Halushki, hot dogs, walking tacos and Mac and cheese.  Come hungry!   Mt. GOODWILL DONATION -The Belle Vernon Public Library will library host a donation drive at Goodwill of SWPa’s Tri County Plaza location Tuesday, April 28. Donations brought there 3:00PM – 6:00PM will help the library raise money, as well benefit Goodwill in their mission to help people overcome barriers to employment. Acceptable donations include clothing, handbags, glass and housewares, cooking accessories, musical instruments, sports equipment and toys. Among the items that cannot be included in the donation day is furniture, baby cribs and gates, computers and televisions. A full list of acceptable and unacceptable items is available at the library. The library is in the North Belle Vernon Municipal Building, 505 Speer Street. EARLY CHRISTIANITY LECTURE - There will be public lecture on Early Christianity by Dr. Marc Wisnoski, PhD of the University of Pittsburgh on Thursday, April 30 at 7:00PM. The lecture will take place in the conference room of the Monongahela Fire Department, next to Monongahela City Hall on Main Street in Monongahela. Dr. Wisnoski's talk is titled: The Earliest Christians: The Apostolic Church from Jerusalem to the Second Century. The lecture will introduce the lives and worship of the early Christians and how it impacts Christian Churches today.

SOUTH HILLS CHORALE - The South Hills Chorale will present its spring concert, ‘Dreamscapes: Songs of Hope and Adventure’, on Friday, May 1 at 7:00 PM and Saturday, May 2 at 1:00 PM at Christ United Methodist Church, 44 Highland Road, Bethel Park. The program explores the universal themes of imagination, perseverance, and the spirit of adventure through an engaging collection of choral works. Audiences will be transported through musical storytelling that ranges from heroic journeys and legendary tales to moments of reflection and inspiration. The South Hills Chorale, a community ensemble of singers from throughout the region, is known for presenting varied and accessible choral repertoire while fostering artistic excellence and community connection. Tickets are $25 and are available online, at the door, or from any chorale member. The performance venue Christ United Methodist Church, offers convenient parking and comfortable seating, providing an ideal setting for this uplifting musical experience.
