Ten years ago, when John Spencer was changing careers, he studied nursing at Community College of Allegheny County. When he received his associate’s degree in nursing, he began his full-time career at Monongahela Valley Hospital. A registered nurse in MVH’s Coronary Care Unit, Mr. Spencer has participated in various health, wellness and educational initiatives, and earned many commendations and honors during the past decade.

His most recent honor was being named the 2016 Cameos of Caring Awardee at the Hospital’s May 12 Nurses Appreciation Breakfast. He was one of 13 distinguished MVH nurses who were nominated by their peers for this honor.

“I’ve come to realize that being a nurse is not what I do but rather who I am,” said Mr. Spencer.

“Knowing that in some small way that I make a difference in someone’s life is the most satisfying part of my nursing career. I often see patients or their family members out in the community and when they recognize me, they offer updates on their medical status and thank me for my role in their lives.”

Mr. Spencer embraces the role of mentor for local high school and nursing students. He participates in the Healthy Hands program for local schools; serves as a presenter at the Belle Vernon High School Medical Club Day; acts as a mentor for clinical nursing students; and serves as a preceptor for new nurses.

John was nominated by his fellow nurses because he shows excellent leadership skills with patients, families and staff members,” said Mary Lou Murt, senior vice president of Nursing. “He always is willing to help others, and he is respected by his colleagues.

The 2016 nominees included:

  • Jennifer Allen, RN, 7-West
  • Mary Capella, RN, ICU
  • Walt Cieply, RN, Behavioral Health
  • Bethany DeLeonibus, RN, 3-PCU
  • Angela DeBasilio-Smida, RN, 6-West
  • Lia C. Gallo, RN, PACU
  • Danielle Jankowski, RN, 4-PCU
  • Natalee Nicole Peters, RN, Emergency Department
  • Helen Pokomo, RN, Same Day Surgery
  • Joyce Smith, RN, 6-East
  • Rosemary Stankovich, RN, Medical Oncology
  • Kelley Ulery, RN, 7-East

Sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, the prestigious Cameos of Caring Award recognizes nurses who demonstrate excellence in nursing care, serve as advocates for patients and families, and embodies the essence of the nursing profession. Mr. Spencer will represent Monongahela Valley Hospital at the 18th Annual Cameos of Caring Awards Gala on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
