By Jill Runfola

New playground equipment designed to allow handicapped and disabled individuals to enjoy was recently installed at North Belle Vernon Community Bank Park.

The new playground equipment is designed for disabled as well as able-bodied children.

A grand opening ceremony was held at the park on Friday, July 6, 2018, at 10:00 am. It was a proud moment for all the hard work and fundraising efforts undertaken during the past several months by the North Belle Vernon Recreation Committee as well as for the children for which it was intended.

have looked and not found another outdoor recreational facility such as this one,” said NBV Councilman RJ Sokol. “We now have a wheel chair swing, swings designed for children with muscular control problems, a glider designed for wheel chairs to go on, and swings designed where mom and dad can swing face to face with their young toddler.”

Lisa Pollock, had the idea for the handicapped accessible park, and approached Sokol. She is the mother of two handicapped children, Adam and Andrew. “What do they do when their siblings are having a good time?” said Pollock. “I wanted them all to have a good time together.”

Sokol added that this recent milestone is only Phase II coming to an end. In what is projected to be Phase III, NBV Park patrons can look forward to renovations of the walking trail and the bleachers, and building a concession stand.

Fundraising efforts are still underway, since some of the money fronted for the work must be paid back. Renting out a park pavilion will also be very important to the park’s finances. The project cost a total of $89,000, supplemented with grants and fundraisers. Donations can be sent to: NBV Rec Commission, 503 Speers St., c/o Park Renovations, Belle Vernon, Pa 15012.
