The 6th Annual Belle Vernon Area Rotary ‘Regatta on the Yough’ was held on Sunday, August 23, 2026 at Cedar Creek Park. All water activities were cancelled because of river conditions, however all landside activities were held.  Duck race winners will be determined at the Penn Highlands Mon Valley Healthplex pool on August 30. e.

New walk-in clinic provides student athletes with local weekend access to expert orthopaedic care

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Student athletes in Washington County and surrounding communities have a new option for fast, convenient treatment of sports-related injuries. On Saturday, Aug. 29, UPMC launched a Saturday Injury Clinic to provide timely orthopaedic care for young athletes injured during games, practices and other athletic activities.

The walk-in clinic, located in Neighbor Health Building #1, Suite 202 at 95 Leonard Ave., will be held every Saturday through Oct. 31 and will provide evaluation and treatment for athletes ages 10 to 26 with recent injuries.

The new service is another example of how UPMC Washington continues to expand access to specialty care and advanced services for people in the community.

"Since becoming part of UPMC, we've been committed to bringing more services, specialists and advanced care closer to home," said Brook Ward, president of UPMC Washington and UPMC Greene. "The opening of our Saturday Injury Clinic is another way we're delivering on that promise. Student athletes and their families shouldn't have to wait until Monday or travel outside the community to receive expert care after an injury. This clinic helps athletes begin treatment sooner and return safely to the activities they enjoy."

The clinic is designed to evaluate injuries sustained within the previous three days. No appointment is required, and patients will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Families are encouraged to arrive between 7:30 and 8 a.m. to register and help ensure they can be seen that day. South Hills Chapter Meets in Bethel Park

Sewing has become increasingly popular. While in the past, people sewed to provide clothing and other household needs, today individuals sew for the satisfaction of creating. For the many who work at high tech jobs with increasing screen time demands, sewing has become a means of relaxation and escape from screen fatigue. In addition, the advancement of what a sewing or embroidery machine is capable of doing has grown by leaps and bounds, expanding the possibilities of what is possible in the creator’s mind.

With the goal of preserving sewing as part of the American culture, the American Sewing Guild (ASG) was established in 1978 initially as a way to keep the interest and tradition of home sewing alive, while at the same time sewing was being dropped from school curriculums and more women were returning to work with less time to sew.   Today ASG operates with over 12,000 members and 135 chapters. Chapters are volunteer driven, organizing events, educational programs, community service projects, and fashion shows. The organization’s mission is to advance sewing as both an art and a life skill, promoting education, community engagement, and the preservation of sewing traditions

Modern day sewers cover the gamut from garment construction, embroidery, quilting and home décor. Sewing classes are readily available in person and online.

A local chapter of the American Sewing Guild, the ‘South Hills Sewcialites’, meets at Bethel Presbyterian Church (2999 Bethel Church Road, Bethel Park) on the third Thursday of the month at 1:00PM and is available on Zoom.

Each year the Guild participates in a charitable sewing project.   This past year the Guild constructed prayer pockets which were distributed to local hospitals and shelters.

At each meeting a lesson is provided to enhance sewing skills. Examples of lessons which have been provided include zipper installation, foundation paper piecing, fabric manipulation, and garment   alteration techniques. Members are also able to access the online lessons from ASG’s library of classes for beginners to advanced sewers.

In addition to these learning opportunities, the guild provides an opportunity to share your work and to get answers or assistance on challenging projects. Meetings offer the opportunity to connect with fellow sewing enthusiasts.   Members have participated in outings to quilt shows, fabric stores, and receive discounts on sewing products, services and events.

State Representative Andrew Kuzma is sponsoring his 4^th Annual Senior Expo on Friday, September 4 at the Boston Spectrum, 6001 Smithfield Street, Elizabeth Township, 15135. This is a free event! No reservation required.

Approximately 40 vendors participate in the expo. The vendors provide a wide range of information and assistance for seniors regarding health, finance, veteran benefits and connect cards through Pittsburgh Rapid Transit on site. Exhibitors are also on hand from state and local agencies to assist and answer questions important to seniors. In addition to the indoor vendors, the large, purple UPMC mobile unit participates each year in the Senior Expo, providing free health screenings to all attendees! The first 300 attendees receive a complimentary box lunch.
