Rep. Bud Cook (R-Washington/Fayette) announced that the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) approved a $50,000 grant to complete the Monongahela Valley Corridor Multimodal Feasibility Study.

“It’s no secret that Washington and Fayette counties have an abundance of natural resources and potential activities for our students and residents,” said Cook. “Moving forward, we must continue to invest in our creeks, streams, rivers and abandoned rail lines to fully maximize the potential of outdoor recreation to create family-sustaining jobs, support healthy communities and foster a higher quality of life throughout the Mon Valley.”

Donora Borough will complete the study to lay the groundwork for the 53-mile Mon Valley Coal and Steel Heritage Trail©. The study will plan 28 miles of Rail to Trail from Marianna to Monongahela and then to Donora with another 25 miles of bike lane along Route 88 from Donora to the Green River Trail near Frederickstown.

Due to the void of adequate distance recreational opportunities provided by the trail systems, the study will also include two master site development studies of the trailheads at the Cokeburg Dam Recreational Area and Donora. The total project cost is $100,000.

The CFA was established as an independent agency of the Commonwealth and holds fiduciary responsibility over the funding of programs and investments in Pennsylvania’s economic growth.
