When you think of superheroes, Batman, Superman, Spiderman and Wonder Woman often come to mind; however superheroes walk among us along the streets in the Mon Valley.

On October 8, during the 13th Annual Monongahela Valley Hospital/Lois Orange Ducoeur Breast Cancer Walk, McKean and Fallowfield Avenues in Charleroi will be filled with superheroes who are raising funds for and awareness of breast cancer. The event supports the prevention, early detection and treatment of breast cancer throughout the community and at Monongahela Valley Hospital (MVH).

Registration for the one- or two-mile fun walk is available prior to the Walk at www.monvalleyhospital.com/fund_development/events or the day of the event beginning at
9 a.m. The Walk starts at 10 a.m. at the Market House.

“Practically everyone knows someone whose life has been touched by breast cancer,” said Melissa Marion, MVH’s director of Fund Development. “Our annual Walk makes a statement that our community is united to fight this disease. It shows that we all have the ability to be superheroes to care for and support those battling breast cancer.”

Walkers are asked to make a minimum donation of $10 each to participate. Often, participants collect donations from family, friends and neighbors who cannot participate.

Upon entering the Market House, participants will experience the festive atmosphere that includes musical entertainment, simple dance lessons provided by representatives from the Center for Fitness and Health and the Mon Valley YMCA, refreshments, a Chinese Auction and health information tables. Breast cancer survivors will be honored before the walk begins with a group photo. A moment of silence will be observed to remember those affected by breast cancer and those who lost their battles. All participants will receive a Pink Power towel to wave at the start of the Walk.

The Walk is made possible through the generosity of sponsors who include Giant Eagle through the Allridge and Bartolotta families, Range Resources, Lee Supply Co., Inc. MarBill Diamonds & Jewelry and Model Cleaners, Uniforms and Apparel.

The Breast Cancer Walk was created to honor the memory of Lois Orange Ducoeur, who lost her battle with cancer in 1965 at age 54. The Ducoeur family operated Orange’s Gift Store and

Ducoeur Furniture Store in Charleroi for 118 years.
