Third graders at Pleasant Valley marked the end of their economic unit with a visit to the building’s “mini-malls.” Students crafted their own items to sell and created 30 second commercials to promote their wares to their fellow students. The students then had the opportunity to purchase items from their classmates in the classroom market.
PTSD2: Bower Hill Competes in Read-a-Thon
On Friday, October 17 Bower Hill students took part in medal ceremonies for the annual Read-a-Thon. All 710 students earned a medal for reading during the event, with more than half of the students reading for at least 400 minutes. Overall, the students read for 250,100 minutes and raised more than $26,800 for PTA events in the building. Awards were given to the students who read for the most minutes and raised the most money at each grade level. This year’s winners were:
- Kindergarten: Joseph Reisinger (minutes read) and Hannah Beinhauer (money raised)
- First Grade: Grace Knight and Cole Martin (minutes read) and Delaney McVicker (money raised)
- Second Grade: Elizabeth Crossan (minutes read) and Nicholas Haught (money raised)
- Third Grade: Alaina Filoon (minutes read) and Aiden Murphy (money raised)
One grand prize winner was selected from among all students who had read for 400 minutes or more, and third grader Luke Trunzo received a family membership to the Carnegie Museums for the year.

Musician Honors
Two Peters Township High School students have been chosen by audition to take part in the PMEA Honors Band and Honors Jazz Band. Grace Casper will be the 2nd chair flute at the Carnegie Music Hall Honors Band event in November; and Nicholas Roberts will be at the piano for the Honors Jazz Band festival at Shadyside Academy in December.
Thespian Honors
Peters Township High School junior Charlie Meyers has been selected by audition to appear in the first All-State Show at this year’s Thespian Conference. Out of hundreds of application, Charlie was selected as one of only ten students to take part in the show. The show will be a revue of songs from the 1920s.
