The Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU) is proud to announce that awards of excellence were presented to five outstanding AIU educators during the June 27 Board of Directors meeting, including several with South Hills connections:
•Mary Mayberry – 2016 Annie Sullivan Award
•Pam Harff – 2016 Apple Award
•Nancy Hahne – 2016 Helping Hands Award
•Pamela Burrett – 2016 World of Gratitude Award
Mary Mayberry, a special education teacher in the AIU’s special education department, is the recipient of the 2016 Annie Sullivan Award. A dedicated educator, Mrs. Mayberry began her career with the AIU in 2003 and currently serves students at the Mon Valley School in a secondary autistic support classroom. A resident of North Franklin Township in Washington County, Mrs. Mayberry holds a bachelor’s degree from La Roche College, a master’s degree from Edinboro University and is currently pursuing board certification as a behavior analyst at California University of Pennsylvania.
Pamela Harff, a school counselor with the AIU’s non-public schools program, is the recipient of the 2016 Apple Award. A veteran school counselor with a wealth of experience, Ms. Harff has been with the AIU since 2009 and has served children in a variety of settings throughout Allegheny County. A North Hills resident, Ms. Harff holds a bachelor’s degree from Williams College along with a master’s degree and a certification in school counseling from Duquesne University.
Nancy Hahne, a paraprofessional at Pathfinder School in Bethel Park, is the recipient of the 2016 Helping Hands Award. Hired in 2000, Ms. Hahne serves children ages 6 to 21 years old as a building aide and assists the staff in meeting the personal, behavioral and educational needs of more than 35 students every day. Through the Pathfinder’s Job Talk program, Ms. Hahne introduces students to simulated work environments and helps them develop the social and behavioral skills needed to succeed. Ms. Hahne has completed a variety of training sessions, including NCI Crisis Management and First Aid/CPR.
Pam Burrett, a teacher in the AIU’s English as a Second Language (ESL) Program at the Mt. Lebanon School District, is the recipient of the 2016 World of Gratitude Award. Ms. Burrett began her career with the AIU in 1994 and has served high school English language learners who hail from almost every continent on Earth. A resident of Mt. Lebanon, Ms. Burrett holds a bachelor’s degree from Rosary Hill College in Buffalo, New York, and a master’s degree from University at Albany, State University of New York (SUNY). She is recently retired.
