When Carroll Twp. resident Kaitlyn Greco passed away unexpected at the age of 19 last summer, she left behind friends, family, and a future that included – once she finished college – teaching elementary school.

The Ringgold High School 2014 graduate was getting ready to return to California University of Pennsylvania in the fall for her sophomore year, where she was studying early childhood education.

While she may be gone, she is certainly not forgotten, and her friends and family want to make sure it stays that way – that's why they've created the Kaitlyn Leigh Greco Memorial Foundation and Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a Ringgold High School senior student planning to major in education.

While the idea of creating a scholarship came from her mom, Perri Greco, the idea to create the foundation came from friends Erin McDonald and Domenic Ferrari, who wanted to plan events to raise money for the foundation that would bring people together in times of happiness - to celebrate Kaitlyn's life rather than mourn it. “The last event that everyone was at honoring Kaitlyn was her funeral, and it was such a sad event. But Kaitlyn wasn't a sad person. She was a happy person, full of life, out in the community, giving her time, letting her personality shine through,” said Ferrari. “We wanted to create the foundation to bring people together for Kaitlyn for a happier occasion.”

To kickstart fundraising efforts for the scholarship fund, a spaghetti dinner is being planned for August 6. The dinner will include a Chinese auction. More information on how to attend or how to contribute as a donor can be found on the Kaitlyn Leigh Greco Memorial Foundation and Scholarship Facebook page, or you can follow the Kaitlyn Leigh Greco Memorial Foundation and Scholarship on Twitter: @KLGMemorialFoundation.
