Peters Twp. Location Seeks New Site of Operation
At Meals on Wheels of Peters Township, we respond to situations day in and day out. We currently serve an average of 200 persons a day, working hard to prepare attractive and healthy meals. The cost for a week of home-delivered meals made mostly from scratch is $25. For $30/week, the delivery includes food for a second light meal every day.
Over the four decades of its existence, our organization has expanded outside the borders of Peters Township to serve senior citizens and homebound clients in Canonsburg, N. Strabane, Houston, Finleyville, Lawrence, and parts of Upper St. Clair, Bethel Park, Bridgeville/S. Fayette, and Eighty Four. Over 250 dedicated volunteers from all walks of life contribute their time and talents to prepare, package, and deliver hot, nutritious meals on 12 daily routes throughout these communities. We always need more volunteer drivers and kitchen helpers on weekday mornings, and offer training and flexible scheduling. Students can earn community service hours by baking desserts or volunteering during summer and holiday breaks.
When our program moved into its current facility above the Peters Township Fire Department in 2009, we hoped to operate out of this space for the indefinite future. Unfortunately, the township has decided not to renew our lease when the current term expires at the end of 2017. An extensive search for a new location to rent that would be appropriate has come up short, so Meals on Wheels of Peters Township is now exploring the exciting yet daunting possibility of constructing our own facility.
If an appropriate location is found, a large-scale fundraising effort will be required to secure the future of this program. In addition to a building fund, our program needs donations towards its everyday meal production expenses, especially to sponsor clients who cannot afford to pay the modest daily fee or who pay a discounted amount.
Meal recipients come from a wide range of economic conditions. Although this program receives no government funding and continually faces rising food and operation costs, we remain committed to serving anyone who needs help, and never deny meal service for a lack of ability to pay. Donation checks can be mailed directly to: Meals on Wheels of Peters Township at 243 E. McMurray Road, McMurray, PA 15317. All donations are tax-deductible, as Meals on Wheels of Peters Township is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
Anyone interested in donating, volunteering, or helping on a fundraising committee should call 724-969-1000 or email mowpt1@verizon.net as soon as possible.
