Since 2005, the Elizabeth Area Development Corporation has been working to revitalize their historic downtown area. The 501c3 non-profit organization is focusing on business development, historic preservation, arts, river recreation and special events.

The committee, comprised completely of volunteers, has worked to fundraise and secure grants for local park improvements, beautification projects in the business district and events that bring the community together, such as the “Sounds like Summer” concert series that starts in June.

The EADC is continuing to build off these successes! A few things on the horizon for this year include the Elizabeth Handmade-Homegrown Market, which takes place the second Saturday of the month and runs June-October. A “Chalk the Walk” event will kick off the market on opening day. You’ll find local farmers and artisans as well as local musicians. July boasts a unique “Blanc en Plum” fundraiser dinner where guests, dressed in all-white attire, dine outdoors in a Sinatra-esque setting. August brings a celebration of heritage with a Frontier Festival, and the EADC is still searching for vendors, artisans and historians to join this event.

These fundraising efforts will offset costs to have historic murals painted throughout the business district, update and install new gateway signs to the borough, and have historic buildings marked with signage. EADC is also working to turn a building into an incubator for small business start-ups. The EADC is always looking for new members and volunteers. Please visit www.downtownelizabeth.com for detailed information on these events and more.
