It was a solemn and reflective time at the memorial service on Nov. 7 at 10 a.m. at the Charleroi Veterans Memorial. Commander Bob Branch, Charleroi American Legion Post 22, welcomed the small gathering of people.

Chaplain Frank Paterra, opening with the Invocation, said, “Your Son died for our soul, and our soldiers died for our freedom.”
Lt. U.S. Army Colonel Peter Kalamaras, Jr., a hometown hero recently retired, was to serve later as Grand Marshall at the 2 p.m. downtown parade. His remarks at the memorial service were in remembrance of those who served. He then asked others to join in a moment of silence.
Kalamaras said, “It was an honor to be asked, and this is my first official duty here. It feels blessed to be back in Charleroi. I grew up in Charleroi a couple of blocks from the Memorial. I’m happy to be here. I’ll be happy to be in the parade.”
Even the chilly weather could not dampen the spirits of the many veterans who turned out for the Charleroi Veterans Parade. The parade was made up of more than 70 participants, local high school marching bands, several veterans groups, a horse-drawn caisson, and fireworks at night. This was all in honor of those whom we thank for serving our country. We also honor and revere those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
