The annual fund campaign and membership renewal for the Greater Monessen Historical Society is underway. Single memberships are $15 per year, with family memberships being $20.

A business membership is available for $50. Membership is based on a calendar year and includes four issues of the “Valley Historian” newsletter. Additional donations provide income to handle the day to day expenses at the Monessen Heritage Museum, as well as carry out the mission of preserving the industrial and ethnic heritage of the Mon Valley region. Building Fund donations will be used to renovate the Museum Annex building, which will expand the display space and provide room for a permanent Monessen display.

The Autumn Exhibit at the Heritage Museum showcases the boats and waterways of Southwestern Pennsylvania from the days of steam to the present. The Museum located at 505 Donner Avenue is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The exhibit will be on display until the end of the year.

In time for the holidays, the Museum Shoppe has three new ethnic cookbooks in stock! Check out the new Scottish/English, African American and Ukrainian recipes in the books. The Shoppe has many items and volumes covering local history, and all make wonderful gifts.

Consider donating any antique Christmas items for use in the front display windows during the holiday season.

When cleaning out attics, cellars and storage areas, please donate Monessen-related, local ethnic and industrial memorabilia and photographs to the Museum. Photographs can also be loaned for scanning, if the originals are wanted by the family.

The Monessen Heritage Museum will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2015, as well as Black Friday, November 27.
