Sports and Celebrity Memorabilia, Game Tickets and Much More!

The Pittsburgh Penguins, Highway Appliance and Lee Supply, in association with the YMCA, proudly present the John Barbero Memorial Scholarship Auction on Sunday, October 11, 2015 at the Mon Valley YMCA. There will be many pieces of great sports and celebrity memorabilia, home goods, services, sporting event tickets, plus much more up for auction.

The event will be held in the gymnasium at the Mon Valley YMCA from 12:30 – 3 p.m. Tickets are $5 each and are at the YMCA in advance and at the door.  All participants will be provided refreshments including pizza compliments of Salatino’s River House, beverages provided by Pepsi Cola, and cookies donated by Keystone Bakery.

Here are some of the activities being planned:

Live Auction:

  • 4 Penguin Captain Morgan Club tickets plus overnight accommodations at the Westin Hotel
  • 4 Pittsburgh Pirate Lexus Club tickets with parking pass, includes all you can eat gourmet dinner
  • Campy’s Pig Pie for year
  • 60 Inch Big Screen Television

Proceeds from this event will benefit the Mon Valley YMCA Youth and Teen Programs as well as fund the John Barbero Scholarship Fund. This year’s John Barbero Scholarship winner is Samantha Mendicino. She is the daughter of Michael and Cheryl Mendicino of Belle Vernon. Samantha will study secondary education at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

John Barbero, a 1963 graduate of California High School went to Grove City College where he majored in business administration. John became employed by WESA radio in Charleroi, and later transferred to California University of Pennsylvania to continue his radio career. Through his career, he served as play-by-play announcer for California Vulcans Football, sports director for WESA radio, English teacher for Monongahela School District, assistant principal at Carroll Junior High and principal at Waynesburg Central High School. He was then hired by the Pittsburgh Penguins as the team’s public address announcer for games at the civic arena.
