In the days preceding Memorial Day, cemeteries and honor rolls are cleaned, decorated, and flags placed on the graves of veterans. On the Sunday morning preceding Memorial Day, veterans gather to visit each site to perform a 21-gun salute in tribute. A formal dinner is held on Sunday evening at Rock Run Inn, Butler Golf Course, where awards are given and the key to the city presented to the Memorial Day guest speaker.
Memorial Day festivities start with a parade through the streets of Elizabeth, PA finishing at the Elizabeth Fire Company lot. Riverside services, the laying of a memorial wreath on the waters of the Monongahela River, and a community luncheon held at the Elizabeth Fire Hall complete the services. Elizabeth offers one of the best Memorial Day programs in the area.
