Help Mon Valley Hospital paint the Valley pink for the 11th Annual MVH/Lois Orange Ducoeur Breast Cancer Walk on Saturday, October 11 at the Charleroi Market House, 423 McKean Ave., Charleroi.
The walk was created to honor the memory of Lois Orange Ducoeur, who lost her battle with cancer in 1965 at age 54. The Ducoeur family operated Orange's Gift store and Ducoeur Furniture Store in Charleroi for 118 years.
Registration for the one- or two-mile fun walk begins at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m. The event supports the prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer in our community at Monongahela Valley Hospital.
Walkers are asked to make a small monetary donation to participate. Teams are welcome and participants are encouraged to wear pink.
Last year's walk raised $14,000 and attracted more than 400 participants.
A committee of 25 local women plan and organize the event and the committee includes representatives from the California University of Pennsylvania, MarBill Diamonds & Jewelry, Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce, The Valley Independent and many others. There are also several breast cancer survivors on the planning committee and they call the walk "their victory lap."
Major event sponsors at the end of August include the Colgan Insurance Agency, MarBill Diamonds & Jewelry, Monessen/Rostraver Rotary and The Valley Independent/Trib Total Media.
