The August 5 meeting was called to order by CO Bill Hess, followed by the playing of the Navy Hymn.
A letter was read from an American Legion member requesting those interested in writing letters to a Navy "BOOT" sailor currently at the Great Lakes Training Center. Caldwell volunteered to write an encouragement letter to this young man. A note and donation made to the Shipmates was received from the Charleroi Golden Agers for their appreciation of the flag presentation that the Flag Committee did at their June 6th meeting.
The Shipmates extended their sympathies to Shipmate Patrick Maloy on the passing into eternal rest, his father, Dr. Elmer Maloy.
Anders thanked all the Shipmates who participated in the Finleyville parade. Nancy Horvath inquired about the possibility of entering a float in the November Veterans' day parade in Monessen. Hess reported that Monongahela will have a Veterans' Day program on Nov. 11, and the Shipmates are invited to participate. George Hutchko presented a list of items in our uniform inventory. Lynn Wilson suggested purchasing lighter-weight flags for use in ceremonial function. He will check this out and report back at the next meeting.
Anders reported that the current Flag Committee chairperson, Marshall Lignian, will be moving to South Carolina in September. Lignian's initiative and leadership will be greatly missed by the committee and was applauded for his outstanding participation in guiding this committee. Another plea to the membership - the flag committee needs help. Please consider joining us and helping out.
The annual indoor picnic was held on July 26 and was attended by 61 members and guests. The catered food was from D&D Caterers. Bingo was called by Eugene Maisano. Door prizes and share the wealth was won by many attendees. Music was supplied by Maloy. A moment of silence was held in memory of Immediate Past Commanding Officer Joseph Acton.
The first CO of the organization, Ken Drummond, attended the picnic and was called upon to speak to the attendees, as was the current CO, William Hess. The picnic committee was chaired by Joseph Gallo, assisted by George Essey, Masci, Fred Kernisky, Wilbur Harris, Maisano and Robert Mascetta. Special recognition was extended to Andy Rudy for his assistance in getting the hall ready for the picnic.
Under new business, a motion was made, seconded and approved to award Marshall Lignian Honorary Life Membership in the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmate Association.
Dismissal prayer was offered by Diehl and the meeting was adjourned until the next meeting which will be held on September 2 at 7 p.m.
