Plans are underway for the annual Founders Day of Living History event sponsored by the Greater Monessen Historical Society. Founders Day will be held on August 16 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Monessen City Park on Grand Blvd. across from the Knights of Columbus Hall. The event is free.
The year 2014 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Monessen founder and noted industrialist, William Henry Donner. Also being celebrated is the 150th anniversary of the Third Battle of Winchester, in which Colonel James M. Schoonmaker led a cavalry charge against the Confederate position, for which he later received the Medal of Honor.
Vendors, individuals or groups interested in reserving a booth at Founders Day are asked to call the Monessen Heritage Museum at 724-684-8460 during regular business hours. The event will feature re-enactors from the 11th P. V. I. Company K, Inc. and the 11th Pennsylvania Reserve Infantry Co. F, who will set up authentic Civil War camps to showcase a living history opportunity regarding life during the War of the Rebellion. There will be food booths, soldier drills, firing of arms, children's activities, games, displays and fun for all ages.
The next exhibit to be showcased in the Heritage Museum will focus on veterans of the Mon Valley region. Items and photographs are currently being sought for loan or donation to be featured in the exhibit. Please contact the museum or drop off items during regular hours.
