The National Road (Route 40) began in 1811 at Cumberland, MD to eventually reach Vanadalia, IL and was known as the road west. Thousands of horses, mules, and Conestoga wagons carried settlers west to dreams of a better life on the frontier. The Festival has also more recently become known for the huge number of yard sales and flea markets set up all along Route 40 for this weekend.
One of the highlights of the National Pike Festival is the reinactment of the Wagon Train which travels Route 40 from site to site. By mid afternoon, to the delight of waiting festival-goers, it reached the grounds of the 33rd Annual National Pike Steam, Gas, and Horse Association Festival in Centerville.
