The Monongahela Area Library recently was the beneficiary of a $1,000 donation from a raffle conducted by Ruth Burnett and her mother, Dorothy Jackson, the proprietors of the Memory Tree and Yarn Branch.

A handsome handmade color block afghan was raffled by the pair at their Chess Street shop to support the local library located only a few blocks away. Loretta Flament of Monongahela was the winner of the warm and cozy prize which had been made by Ruth Burnett.

Burnett noted that, “the town had been unbelievably generous” in purchasing tickets. While the library sold some tickets, the mother-daughter pair had even gone from business to business in the final days of the raffle to ensure a sellout.

Library Director Elina Filander commented, “We were all so touched and surprised that Ruth and Dorothy did this for the library. We very much appreciate their hard work.”

The director also noted the Chamber of Commerce had been great in making sure the word got out to businesses that this was going on.

While they had never done anything like this before at the yarn and knitting supply store, Burnett felt that as “a big believer in the library” it was a worthy effort.
