“I went to my doctor after my car/work accident. I was in a lot of pain and was given prescription pain medications. It made me feel good. I took it as directed and refilled it when I was due. One day my doctor decided I no longer needed this medication. But I did. At least I thought I did. I called the office and begged and pleaded for just one more refill, with no avail. Finally, I talked to a friend about how terrible my doctor was that he would not refill this medication. My friend then said I could buy this medication from his sister’s neighbor. This was great. However, one pill costs $80 and I could no longer afford this. What was I to do? Herion was my next and only option. I could afford it and it was easy to get. I was able to hide my addiction from my friends and family. I became a very good liar and thief. Until one day it all came crashing down on me. I heard my mom’s voice. Screaming. Crying. I was dead. How did this happen to me?”
It did happen and it can happen. Prescription drug abuse is a huge problem in our community. Many parents aren’t aware of the danger and aren’t educating their children. They may be more focused on marijuana, cocaine and heroin while not realizing that prescription drugs are such a threat. Kids are taking these prescriptions from their parents or grandparents and are getting addicted. They like how it feels, and when they can’t get them anymore, they also resort to heroin.
The Practice of K. Gosai, MD & A.J. Gandhi, MD are sponsoring another prescription drug summit in the Mon Valley. These summits have become a joint venture between the District Attorney’s office, Coroner’s office, Monongahela Valley Hospital, Jefferson Regional Medical Center, DEA, and local treatment centers. Although the day time programs focus on high school and middle school students, the evening program is geared for educating the community.
Please join us on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at Bentworth Area High School at 6:30 pm to discuss this growing problem in our community. For more information, please call: 724-483-6300.
