Friends of South Park, the County Park view 2012 as a successful year by totaling 1,096 hours of service.
Volunteer hours did not include time spent on three successful fundraising events, which included a golf outing in May, a flea market in September, and a wine tasting event in October. Fundraising events yielded a combined total of $8,735. The Friends also sponsored cleanup days in the spring and fall and launched a solar lighting project for the illumination of Corrigan Drive by securing sponsors for 12 lights. This summer, the Friends plan to rebuild the fitness trail along McConkey Road. County Executive Rich Fitzgerald has visited the Friends twice to discuss improvements to South Park, specifically the South Park Fairgrounds Oval Project.
The Friends will host five public events in 2013: an Oldies Dance in March, an April 20 Spring Clean-Up Day, a golf outing on May 18, a Fall Clean-Up Day, and a fall wine tasting event. The “Oldies in the Park” dance will be held on Saturday, March 23, from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Home Economics Building in South Park.
