Ever step out of bed in the morning and instantly feel a sharp pain in your heel? Chances are you may have heel spurs. A heel spur is a small growth on the bottom of your heel bone that frequently causes pain.
The heel pain also may extend into the arch of your foot affecting a band of tissue supporting your your arch called the plantar fascia. Most people notice increased pain when they first take a few steps after they have been sitting or resting for an extended period of time. However, the heel can be sore all the time or become worse if left untreated. The good news is that heel pain can usually be treated with nonsurgical options such as anti-inflammatory medications, changing shoe gear, wearing custom insoles or orthotics, and laser therapy. Sometimes heel spurs may best be treated surgically. Making an appointment to see a podiatrist will enable you to work together and decide on the best treatment plan for you.
