The Sisters of St Francis of the Providence of God are making the choice of having meatless dish for Ash Wednesday a little easier. For their monthly Take-Out on Wednesday, February 13,
the Sisters will be offering homemade haluski - a traditional meatless dish of cabbage and noodles sautéed in butter and seasonings, as well as two soups. The menu also includes an alternative meatless meal of vegetable lentil soup. They are also continuing to offer a traditional wedding soup with chicken and meatballs, which, for those observing Ash Wednesday, can be eaten the next day or frozen for future enjoyment. All selections are $5 a quart and come with two dinner rolls. Orders must be placed by Thursday, February 7 by calling 412-885-7232.
Soup orders can be picked up on Wednesday, February 13 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Sisters' Motherhouse, located at 3603 McRoberts Road in the South Hills. The Sisters Gift Shoppe will also be open, and Franciscan Blend coffee is available at the front desk. All proceeds benefit the Sisters of St. Francis of the Providence of God.
The Sisters hold monthly take-outs from September to May, where patrons are offered several homemade selections. Using fresh ingredients, their chef makes the soups more healthy by omitting additional salt and preparing cream soups with skim milk instead of heavy cream. Wedding, their most popular soup, is always offered along with rotating selections that may include chicken, broccoli, potato, vegetable lentil, and others. They also occasionally offer haluski, as on February 13, or chili.
