On Tuesday, December 18, the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates held their annual Christmas Party at the American Legion Post 949 in Carroll Twp. A tremendous turnout and the weather was truly in our favor; it was a wonderful evening.
Our financial officer, Joseph Acton, was admitted to the Mon Valley Hospital and XO Barry was gracious to include Joe in the prayers of the blessing of the food prior to being served, and a card was out for all to sign to send to him. Our prayers and get well wishes was very abundant for Joe!
The evening started out by being greeted at the door by George Diehl and Dorothy Cowan, Barry and Diane Anders, Joe and Nancy Tencer, all of whom manned the tables with the roster check-in and tickets for drinks and prizes. After an hour of fellowship, Marshall Lignian gave the invocation and Cdr. Bill Hess introduced the new members that were accepted this past year. XO Barry Anders gave the blessing and D&D Catering of Arnold City’s buffet was ready for all to share. A round of applause was given to the caterers for a delicious and plentiful meal.
Chairman Jim Caserta, toastmaster for the evening, welcomed the attendee and called up Yeoman Jim Caldwell, who read "The Night Before Christmas, Sailor Style." Jim presented a David Letterman take-off of 10 reasons for joining the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates. Lorraine Caserta gave a reading of "Santa & Jesus" and followed with another reading of "Attitudes." XO Barry Anders followed by reciting the message of "It's a Veteran." Jim Caserta explained some of the happenings this past year at different events that included many mishaps of Co-Chair George Diehl. Jim also presented a take-off of "The Marriage Counselor."
Missing this year was the arrival of Santa. This was always Joseph Zywan’s honor and this year, Joe has been recuperating and unable to attend. He was missed by all.
The Two-Bell service was conducted by Bill Hess, George Diehl and Marshall Lignian, followed by the reading of the names of our departed shipmates by Jim Caserta. Jim introduced the officers and committee chairpersons and thanked them for their services this past year. Also acknowledged was the
incoming chaplain for the new year, Fr. Fred Pfeil.
The share the wealth was won by Wilbur Harris and ten gift certificates were won by Fred Owens, Nancy Tencer, Sam Levy, Peggy Savadeck, Mario Muccino, John Perozzi, Bob Mascetta, Norma Muccino, Marcella Ricci, and Elmer Trusky.
George Hutchko, Commander of the A.L. Post 949, asked for a moment of silence in honor of the Sandy Hook victims and then gave the benediction to conclude the evening.
The party committee was comprised of Jim Caserta and George Diehl, co-chairpersons, and Barry Anders, Bill Hess, Jim Caldwell and Marshall Lignian.
