In honor of Black History Month, the Greater Monessen Historical Society will sponsor a lecture and discussion at Monessen Public Library and Cultural Center on Saturday, February 9 at 1 p.m. Professor Willie Pigg will discuss the sesquicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
In Monessen’s early history, Emancipation Day was widely celebrated by the local African American community. The lecture will be the first in a series of events to celebrate Monessen’s 115th anniversary and is open to the public. Also, as a tie-in to the lecture, the library will have a showing of The Littlest Rebel starring Shirley Temple on Friday, February 8 at 7 p.m. as part of their Friday Family Movie Night.
Photos, historic memorabilia, and materials are being sought for the spring ethnic exhibit, which will open in March. This year’s exhibit will honor the Croatian community. Anyone with items that tell the story of Croatia and the Croatian immigrants who came to the Greater Monessen area are asked to contact the Monessen Heritage Museum at 724-684-8460.
To make that special dinner for St. Valentine’s Day, stop at the Heritage Museum and purchase an ethnic cookbook . Various nationality cookbooks are available and contain old-fashioned family recipes that have been passed through the generations.
With the Lenten season fast approaching, the Historical Society is now selling packs of historic Monessen church postcard reprints. Each pack contains seven assorted postcards and costs $5. Send them to friends and relatives.
Membership renewals are now due. Membership runs a calendar year of January through December and cost $15/individual and $20 /family. Business memberships are $50. Please send membership requests to: Monessen Heritage Museum, 505 Donner Ave., Monessen, PA 15062.
