Calling all volunteers! If you have an interest in history, research, archiving, fundraising, working with students of all ages, working on some amazing projects, or working with people from all over the world, we may have an opportunity for you at the Donora Historical Society.
We are always on the lookout for individuals who can help promote and advance the Society.
Some of the special events that we completed in 2012 are: African-American history in Donora – Part I and II (February and March); open house during the Stan “The Man” Musial bridge dedication (May); St. Dominic’s Church historical presentation at the Donora Library (June); open house during the Donora Fireman’s Street Fair (August); booth at the Whiskey Rebellion Festival in Washington, PA (August); book signing of After the Fog, a novel of historical fiction by Kathleen Shoop (September); presentation at the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh as part of the Environmental Teen Town Hall & National Youth Summit on the Dust Bowl by Ken Burns with a live webcast with the Smithsonian Institution (October); Second Annual Cement City Walking Tour (October); Palmer Park and the Legion Field historical presentation with Ron Paglia; and our Christmas Party.
Some of the projects that we completed in 2012 are: launching the Donora Historical Society website www.donorahistoricalsociety.org (May); hosting Pioneer Productions from London, England for the Weather Channel documentary series titled “When Weather Changed The World” (November); working with Shutterbug Magazine’s December issue on our Bruce Dreisbach glass plate negative collection; holding our Christmas wreath and garland fundraiser (November); and submitting a ‘Rivers of Steel’ matching grant application for further Dreisbach negative development.
While remembering and respecting our past, the Donora Historical Society is looking forward to new projects and programs. Some of our anticipated events and projects for 2013 include: booth at the Washington County Historical Society Fair (February); Cement City Walking Tour – Third Annual (October); Western PA History magazine “Cement City” article by Brian Charlton; open house during the Donora Fireman’s Street Fair (August); booth at the Whiskey Rebellion Festival (August); University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Slavic Language and Literature who wants to meet and view our Slovakian artifacts; Weather Channel’s “When Weather Changed The World” documentary release; Dreisbach negative development with Photo Antiquities; Stan Musial Donora High School throwback #16 jersey; work with Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh; History of Donora DVD; submit other grants; and work with Rivers of Steel on tourism opportunities.
Your project can be your own. You are free to suggest anything that could directly benefit the Society’s mission. If you have some spare time in the evenings or weekends; summers, winters or any season; either at the museum or at home, we would like to hear from you.
The next presentation after our holiday break will be on Monday, February 4 and will feature Joshua Scully, who will present the D.L. Clark Candy Company and their influence on the Pittsburgh region.
The Donora Historical Society and Smog Museum is located at the intersection of Sixth and McKean in the heart of Donora, and is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or by appointment.
