Friends of South Park will kick off their ‘Grand Spring Event’ with a pre-sale of colorful, locally grown, annuals then culminate with sales of locally grown perennials and advice on their care from Master Gardner’s.
Hanging baskets, patio pots and flats of flowering annuals are available for pre-sale until April 20 on the Friends website, www.southparkfriends.org. Pick up will be May 2 just in time for Mother’s Day. Perennials will include cannas, Shasta daisy, Stella d’oro daylillies and ornamental grasses.
The ‘Grand Spring Event’ will be held at the Home Economics Building (behind the County Police Barracks in South Park) from 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM. “Dr. Phipps” Master Gardeners will be available to answer any questions you may have as well as discuss how to plant for birds, bees and butterflies. Barbara Brewton from the Allegheny County Parks Foundation will update us on improvements that are planned for the park and Max Bader, Senior Park Ranger, Allegheny County Parks, will discuss how to get involved in park projects.
The Friends of South Park is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to promoting and preserving the beauty and history of South Park. All proceeds from this sale will be used to enhance South Park. More information as well as meeting dates can be found on their website at www.southparkfriends.org.
Last year's proceeds were included in the $10,000 contributed by the Friends to the restoration of the Cascades at Stone Manse. This year the Friends are working with Allegheny County to refurbish the ponds at Maple Springs Gazebo and the Game Preserve on Buffalo Drive.
