On Wednesday April 17, 2019, the Monessen Salvation Army, located at 308 Schoonmaker Ave., opened their doors to the public for a free Easter Dinner.

The dinner was held from 4:00 – 6:30 pm and about 150 attended the dinner. Monessen Salvation Army Captain Sue Thwaite prepared the meal herself this year, along with the help of several volunteers.

The buffet-style meal featured a traditional Easter menu of ham, green beans, greens, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, salad, macaroni salad, and more. Rev. Christina Turner of Newness of Life Ministries made a large variety of delicious cookies. In total, they served 7 hams, 10 dozen cookies, 4 cakes, 1 pie, and more laughter than could be counted.

“We like to do this for the community to bring everyone together for good food and fellowship,” Captain Thwaite said. “We also want to make sure everyone gets to celebrate Easter Dinner,” she added.
