Keynotes

Keynotes of South Hills is a non-profit organization that provides scholarships for music students who reside in the South Hills communities of Pittsburgh. A brunch was held at the Lemont restaurant in Mt. Washington on May 20, to honor the winners and present them with their checks and enjoy mini performances by the winners.

There were four winners this year.

  • First place - a cash award of $5,000 went to Alexandra Aks, a soprano from Carnegie Mellon University.
  • Second place - an award of $3,000 went to Alicia Guterriz who played a clarinet and is a student at Duquesne University.
  • Third place - an award of $2,000, went to Kyle Johnson, a cellist from Carnegie Mellon University.
  • Honorary mention - a $1,000 award went to Richard Palermo, a violist from Duquesne University.

Our first scholarship of $1,000.00 was awarded in 1971 and has continued with Keynotes Awarding at least $10,000.00 yearly. To date, Keynotes has awarded $385,000.00 to music students of exceptional talent. Many of our winners have gone on to successful careers in the field of music and some have come back to be judges for the competition.
