Many historic structures designed by Swiss-born architect Paul B. Riis and built by the Civilian Conservation Corps can be found within South Park - Allegheny County Parks and are a rich part of the heritage of this area.
The Vale area |
The Paul Riis Legacy Preservation Volunteers are a group of volunteers from South Park and surrounding communities whose mission is to play an active role in the stewardship of all of the structures that Paul Riis created, and the preservation of his legacy.
One of these structures is the Vale of Cashmere. The Vale is a series of beautiful stone channels and pools that we are currently clearing out and excavating.
There will be a work party held at the Vale on Saturday, May 26 from 9 a.m. to noon to do stonework excavation using hand tools, and some light maintenance to keep this area free of weeds, brush and other debris. We welcome volunteers of any age who are interested in participating. If you are interested in donating some time for a great cause, please contact Anne at 3riversgems@verizon.net for details and to sign up.
Please RSVP before May 24. Snacks and refreshments will be available during the cleanup. We would especially love to hear from anyone who may have old photos or memories of the Vale of Cashmere to share.
