The Greater Monessen Historical Society wishes to thank Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center and the many patrons and friends who turned up for the birthday party on June 24, commemorating the 175th anniversary of Colonel James Schoonmaker’s birthday.
Colonel Schoonmaker was the hero of the Third Battle of Winchester, for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, as well as a founder of the City of Monessen.
The annual Founders Day celebration will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2017, at Monessen City Park and will feature a car cruise by the Monessen/Rostraver Rotary Club. There will be re-enactors setting up an authentic Civil War camp, games, food booths, entertainment and fun for the entire family.
