Outstanding Cadets Honored by VFW Post 914

Earning top honors for this year’s competition are Cadet Tech. Sgt. Joao Martinez-Lopes, Cadet Tech. Sgt. Joshua Gurtner, Cadet Senior Airman Erin Beech and Cadet Senior Airman Brittany Velez. All are students at West Mifflin Area High School. The four cadets were each presented a medal and a certificate by VFW Post 914. They were selected from approximately 140 other members in the West Mifflin corps of cadets by their senior leadership staff to receive this honor.

“Each passing year with our post’s involvement in this great school program, we’re amazed at the quality of youth represented at the recognition ceremonies.” said VFW Post 914 Quartermaster Gary Ruston. “Without exception, our membership has been pleased with its involvement and will continue to do so in the future.”

West Mifflin Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 914 Intrepid has supported the West Mifflin Area High School Air Force JROTC program since its inception. According to Post Commander Jake Bradich, the JROTC program, as the military, works to instill solid core values such as teamwork, patriotism, discipline and service before self.

“Such positive attributes can serve these cadets well not just in the military, but in other aspects of their lives.” the commander said.

Bradich added that the VFW Post here is proud to count as some of its current membership combat-decorated soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who have been through the Air Force JROTC at West Mifflin and later won battle honors in Iraq and Afghanistan. Other Air Force JROTC participants have gone on to distinguish themselves in academics at the university level, while still more are working to become commissioned officers in the military.
