The Charleroi Area Historical Society cordially invites fellow societies and residents of the surrounding area to its first meeting of the 2017 programs schedule on Monday, March 21 at 7 p.m.
The guest speaker will be Scott Higinbotham, Show Chair of the National Pike Steam, Gas and Horse Association. "The Association was founded in 1980 to encourage and foster knowledge of farming and industrial procedures of the past; to promote the fellowship and good times between young and old who own and operate or are interested in the equipment or procedures," according to the Heritage Alliance of Southwestern Pennsylvania.
This Association of 1,200 members operates in a museum and on show grounds of 105 acres, located at 222 Spring Road, Centerville Borough off Old National Pike. Higinbotham plans to talk about how the Association originated - the reason why it came to be and why it continues to exist.
Looking ahead to April 18's program: Clay Kilgore, director and curator of the Washington County Historical Society and a favorite speaker for our Society, returns to speak on a new topic of interest - the stone quarry of Washington County. Did you know we had one? Where it was located? How many buildings' foundations/structures were quarried from it? Does it still exist? The answers to these questions and much more information will fill Kilgore’s time with us.
The Charleroi Area Historical Society holds program meetings during the months of March through October in the Senior Citizens Room - Riverside Place - in the SPHS Center/Chamber Plaza, Charleroi. All programs begin at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) and are free and open to the public. Light refreshments are served. Feel free to share this information with your friends.
