Monessen Public Library Announnces Fall Events.

Storytime

A daytime Storytime program will be held at Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center on Wednesday mornings from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. for children aged 3 to 7.  Old favorites and new stories will be read to the children at each session.  The children will be encouraged to explore the many books available in the Children’s Room for their enjoyment.  Registration is not necessary

The evening Storytime programs will resume later in September after the children return to school.  Further details will be forthcoming in the newspaper, website and on Facebook.

Beginning Genealogy Class

Claire McMullen will host her “Beginning Genealogy” class on Saturday, September 12, 2015, at 11 AM, in the PA Room of Monessen Library.  This month’s topic will cover Part 2 of birth, marriage, divorce and death records, along with obituaries and death notices.  Participants are encouraged to bring examples from their personal family records.  Light refreshments will be served.  The class is free.

The Mon Valley Genealogy Forum will meet on Monday, September 21, 2015, at 5:30 PM.  The Forum is free and covers topics of current interest for genealogy.  Light refreshments will be served.

Kevin Manning Program

On Thursday, September 17, 2015, from 7 – 9 p.m. astronomer, author and national speaker, Kevin Manning, a former consultant to NASA, will present an intriguing and thought provoking program of exploration into our universe.  Come enjoy an educational and entertaining exploration of the universe, the stars and other celestial wonders.  This dynamic and engaging program will feature the opportunity to view the amazing rings of Saturn, craters of the moon and other jewels of the night sky through a powerful telescope, weather permitting!

Mon Valley Art Club Exhibit

The Mon Valley Art Club will hold their annual exhibition at the Library on Sunday, September 27, 2015, from 1 to 4 p.m.  The public is invited.  The paintings will remain on display for two weeks following the exhibition.

Adult Literacy Program

An Adult Literacy Program is being planned for the Library.  If interested in either being a tutor or participating as a pupil, stop by the Library and register for this free service.  Tutors will receive training prior to the beginning of the program.

Craft Class

Starting in September, a new Craft Class, for young artists aged 6 and over, will begin at the Library.  Crafts will be created for the Monessen Community Christmas Tree.  For further information and to register, stop at the Circulation Desk.

Monessen Military Banner Tribute

Ron Chromulak, Chairman of the Monessen Veterans Council and Dave Zilka, Director of Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center, have announced that the Monessen Veterans Council is partnering with Monessen Public Library to sponsor the Monessen Military Banner Tribute.  Through the program, a living or deceased veteran or an active duty member of the military can have their photograph displayed on a banner hung from a utility pole in the City of Monessen.

The cost of producing and displaying the banner is $100 per banner.  The banners will be hung as soon as they are received and taken down after Labor Day.  They will be used for years to come in the city and displayed from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
