Children in grades 2 through 5 gathered at the Rostraver Public Library on Thursday, July 9 to celebrate “Hometown Heroes.”

Police from the Rostraver Police discuss their work with children at the Rostraver Public Library.

On hand to talk to the children were Lt. John Christner and Officer Chris Tretter of the Rostraver Police Department; March Chiste, a master sergeant in the U.S. Army; and Jason Demko, who works with the Belle Vernon Drug Task Force with Ozzy, his 14-year-old German Shepard.

While the humans could only talk about their work and alert the children to some of the dangers they should watch out for, Ozzy put on a display of his eager efforts to track down scents. He displayed both the ability to search for objects hidden within the shelves of books and also to find objects in the outdoors where wind and other scents could distract him.

The program was funded as part of a grant from the Michael J. and Aimee Rusinko Kakos Fund of the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County. The Rostraver Public Library is located off Rte. 51 in Belle Vernon.
