Library News

The Monongahela Area Public Library announces the following August events.

Summer Reading Club will meet on Tuesday, August 2 at 1 p.m.

Storytime will be held on Tuesday, August 9, 16, and 23 at 11 a.m.

The Foster Grandparents will be meeting at Monongahela Area Library on Friday, August 19 from 11 a.m. - 4p.m. The Foster Grandparent volunteers help children develop academic and life skills critical to future success. Volunteers support children in: Head Start and preschool programs, kindergarten through 12th grade, and before and after school programs. Become a foster grandparent!

Color Me Happy Hour will continue to be held on Tuesdays, from 5:30p.m. – 7 p.m. The program is designed for young adults through adults of all ages.

The Writer’s Group will meet on Wednesday the 3rd and Wednesday the 17h at approximately 6 p.m. in the activities room.

Special Programs
On Wednesdays, August 3, 10, and 17, Miss Becky will hold Cruise into Kindergarten, where she will go over letters, numbers, counting, and colors.

On Saturday, August 6, Monongahela Area Library will host Sign Language Interpreter Kim Barkey for two separate American Sign Language Classes. The first class is designed for infants (yes, infants!) and parents through children age four, and will be held from 11 a.m. - noon. The second class is for children ages five through ten and will be held from 1 p.m. - 2 p.m.

On Saturday, August 13 from noon - 1 p.m., Sign Language Interpreter Kim Barkey returns to teach American Sign Language for ages 11 through adult.

On Thursday, August 11 at 1 p.m., Monongahela Area Library hosts a Family Block Party! Come and build something with your children, we have smooth wood blocks and Legos to help you and your children build with your imaginations.

On Thursday, August 18 at 1 p.m., Book Bites will discuss the book “The Johnstown Flood” by David G. McCullough.

On Saturday, August 20 at 4 p.m., there will be a Drug Advisory Class. This program will focus on signs of drug abuse, how you can help the abuser, treatment, and resources for the family. Gateway Rehab presents the program.

On Saturday, August 27 at 1 p.m., Monongahela Area Library hosts volunteer Mickey Forte from the Mon Valley YMCA to help you learn self defense in the event of an attack. Mickey asks that you dress just the way you dress for a normal day at work or out shopping. If you wear heels and a skirt to work, please wear that to the class so you can learn how to defend yourself in your normal everyday dress. Class size is limited to 20 people so sign up soon. Ages 15 and up. If the class is successful, we may run it again.
