Monongahela Valley Hospital is sponsoring a variety of informative programs in October. Many of the events will be held in the hospital's Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center (ECC) unless otherwise noted.

 

Bone Density Screening - Wednesday, October 1 from 1 - 3 p.m., Healthy Directions at the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Do you have brittle bones? Have you ever had a bone density test? This free, painless screening will indicate if you have osteoporosis and need more extensive testing. No appointments necessary. For more information, call 724-348-6699.

Apple/Fall Festival - Friday, October 3 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Outdoor Central Plaza and ECC. This annual event offers a variety of fall items for sale, including hardy mums, pumpkins, cornstalks, decorations, baked goods and a delicious meal in the comfort of the Anthony M. Breast Cancer Support Group - Monday, October 6 from 2 – 4 p.m., Hospital, 7-East Family Room. This support group is free and open to all breast cancer patients and their families. The group meets the first Monday of each month. For more information, call 724-258-1704.

Baby Care Class - Monday, October 6 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. Parents-to-be will learn baby care basics at this instructional session. Topics include home safety, car seat safety, immunizations, breast and bottle feeding, pacifiers, bathing and additional topics. For more information, call 724-258-BABY (2229) ext. 9.

Managing Your Diabetes - Tuesday, October 7 – Thursday, October Aug. 9 from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m., ECC. Learn more about food choices, dining out and how personal eating habits affect your blood glucose control. Completion of the three-day "Diabetes Self-Management Training" is required prior to attending this class. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the class. Smoking Cessation Program - Tuesdays, October 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 6 - 8 p.m., Bentleyville Holiday Inn. Classes are offered at no charge to MVH Primary Care Resource Center (PCRC) patients, MVH employees and anyone with a referral from an MVH-affiliated primary care physician. Is Weight Loss Surgery Right For You? - Wednesday, October 8 at 5:30 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX, room 120. Bariatric surgery is an option for people wanting to lose 100 pounds or more. MVH has teamed up with Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC to provide this free information session designed to give those individuals struggling with weight loss the facts to choose their best option. To learn if you are a candidate for this surgery, join Carol McCloskey M.D., FACS, as she discusses this topic in detail. Enjoy a heart-healthy cooking demonstration prior to the 6 p.m. discussion. 11th Annual MVH Lois Orange Ducoeur Breast Cancer Walk - Saturday, October 11 at 10 a.m., Charleroi Market House, 423 McKean Avenue, Charleroi. Join friends and neighbors as they walk to support the prevention, early detection and treatment of breast cancer in our community at Monongahela Valley Hospital. Registration begins at 9 a.m. the day of the event or register early at www.monvalleyhospital.com. Pre-registration is not required. A $10 minimum donation is suggested for anyone over the age of 6. The first 300 walkers raising or donating a minimum of $25 will receive a commemorative bag. The first 400 donors receive a goody bag and a pink power towel. For more information, call 724-258-1855.

The Better Breathers Club is free and open to all adults and their families, friends or caregivers who want to learn or share information about living well with breathing issues such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema. RSDS Support Group - Tuesday, October 14 at 6 p.m., ECC. The Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSDS) Support Group is free and open to all persons with RSDS or related illnesses. For more information, call 724-929-9492.

25th Annual Medical Staff Symposium - Wednesday, October 15 from 7:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., ECC. This annual event featuring renowned speakers from across the country is designed as an update for physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals about the "advances in infectious diseases." Advanced Carbohydrate Counting - Wednesday, October 15 from 6 – 8 p.m., ECC. This is a diabetes self-management class that focuses on counting carbohydrate intake. Topics range from how to measure the upward drive each meal has on blood sugar to information on the glycemic index. Completion of the three-day "Diabetes Self-Management Training" is required prior to attending this class. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the class. Cancer Support Group - Monday, October 20 at 2 p.m., Hospital, 7-East Family Room. This support group is free and open to all cancer patients and their families. The group meets the third Monday of each month. For additional information, call 724-258-1704.

Talk with a Lung Specialist - Tuesday, October 21 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m., Healthy Directions at the Finleyville Giant Eagle. In observance of National Respiratory Care Week (October 19-25), Monongahela Valley Hospital's Director of Respiratory Care Beverly Tokar will present an educational program on lung health and conduct a pulmonary function test (PFT). She will discuss diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma and the importance of early detection of lung diseases. Walk-ins welcome. To register, call 724-348-6699.

Living Well Through the Seasons - Wednesday, October 22 from 1 – 3 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. The Nutrition and Food Service staff from Monongahela Valley Hospital and staff from the Center for Fitness and Health in Rostraver have teamed up to discuss simple ways to achieve fitness and better health through low-fat nutrition tips, stress management and healthy holiday eating. Innovations in Medicine – Celiac Disease - Wednesday, October 22 at 6 p.m., ECC. Jennifer Hadam-Veverka, M.D., gastroenterologist, will present a free program to discuss the causes and treatment of celiac disease. This program is part of MVH's Innovations in Medicine talks featuring physician guest speakers providing medical information to the community. Light refreshments will be served and parking is free. AARP 55 Alive Beginners Driving Course - Thursday, October 23 and Friday, October 24 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., ECC. The nation's first and largest classroom driver improvement course specially designed for motorists age 50 and older. It is intended to help improve skills while teaching accident and traffic violation avoidance. Some insurance companies offer discounts for course completion. The cost is $15 per person for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Pre-registration is required, call 724-258-1333.

Breastfeeding Class - Monday, October 27 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. This free class is designed for mothers who plan to breastfeed to help them feel more comfortable and confident while feeding their newborns. Many props are used in this class including breast pumps. Diabetes Support Group - Monday, October 27 from 6 - 8 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX, Room 215. This support program is free for people with diabetes, their families and caregivers. Innovations in Medicine – Treating Cartilage Injuries - Tuesday, October 28 at 6 p.m., ECC. Shaka M. Walker, M.D., orthopedic surgeon, will present a free program to discuss the treatments and repair of cartilage injuries without joint replacement. This program is part of MVH's Innovations in Medicine talks featuring physician guest speakers providing medical information to the community. Light refreshments will be served and parking is free. Breast Cancer Luncheon, Education and Screening - Wednesday, October 29 from 1 - 3 p.m., ECC. Learn how early detection and diagnosis can protect you and those you love from breast cancer. Physicians and other health care professionals will present the program and offer informational displays. Participants may also receive a free breast exam. Stroke Support Group - Thursday, October 30 from 1 – 2:30 p.m., ECC. The Stroke Support Group is designed for patients and caregivers to share, learn and grow with people who can personally relate to the daily challenges and struggles they face dealing with strokes and their after-effects. Infant and Child CPR Class - Thursday, October 30 from 6 - 9 p.m., ECC. Learn how to help a choking baby or small child. Sign up to learn emergency life saving techniques of clearing airway obstructions and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The $40 fee is payable to VHSTC and advance registration is required by calling the Valley Health and Safety Training Center at 724-684-9536.

MVH Blood Drive - Friday, October 31 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., ECC. Monongahela Valley Hospital, in conjunction with the American Red Cross, is sponsoring a blood drive to benefit local patients.
