Del Suppo Pools in Donora Celebrates 40 Years in Business

By Christen M. Stroh

For Del Suppo of Donora, 2017 marks 40 years in business, and Del Suppo Pools is acknowledging the milestone anniversary all year long.

Tony Clement, who handles marketing, media, and sales at Del Suppo Pools, stands in front of a banner in the store announcing the company’s 40 year anniversary.

Del got his start in the working world by beginning in the construction industry. Along the way, he learned how to build and install swimming pools, and he saw an opportunity to fill a niche in a market that hadn’t yet been tapped. Thus, Del Suppo Pools was founded in 1977.

The company was originally just Del and his wife, Judy, working hard to establish themselves and build a reputation for providing their clients with solid work while building meaningful relationships. Forty years later, the principals of hard work and strong client relationships are still what drive the business, though the number of people employed has gone from two to 15 during the peak business season.

The employees who work for Del Suppo Pools enjoy the family-like atmosphere that has been created over the years. Tony Clement, who handles marketing, media, and sales, said, “I enjoy working for a family-run business because I get to do a lot of different creative things in this role.” Diedre Rozik, who handles bookkeeping and accounting, shares that sentiment, stating, “The people who work here are very personable, and I like working close to home.”

One of the people who first joined the staff is Del and Judy’s son, Buster, who got involved in the family business 30 years ago, in 1987. Today, Buster handles just about every aspect of the business in some capacity - from installation and part replacements to measurements and more. He also oversees marketing and bookkeeping, manages the laborers, and is onsite for all pool builds.

The staff is not the only thing that has grown in the past 40 years. Three years ago, Del Suppo Pools moved its location to 26 McKean Ave. in Donora, not far away from its original location. The new location is bigger and more modern, built to specification and designed to showcase pools and spas, as well as water accessories. The business can also do water testing and analysis in-store so that clients understand how to maintain their pools and keep them chemically balanced and safe.

As part of the year-long celebration of 40 years in business, the staff is wearing blue T-shirts with the dates of 1977 – 2017 on them. Customers have been receiving tumblers and drink cozies, as well, and to acknowledge the hard work that everyone has put in over the years, Del Suppo Pools is taking the staff to a Pirate game at PNC Park for a celebratory outing on September 2.
