School News

The Community College of Allegheny County will hold a free Healthcare Careers Academy (HCA) at South Campus for students from the South Hills – Mon Valley areas during the month of July.  HCA is a two-week summer experience designed to expose students who are entering grades 10, 11 and 12 to family-sustaining career options in healthcare. Participants will discover that today’s healthcare careers extend well beyond being a physician or nurse—and that many of these careers can be attained with a CCAC education. This project, funded by the Jefferson Regional Foundation, aims to empower students with the goal to increase their own economic mobility, and, on a larger scale, to improve the economic health of our region.

When Thomas Jefferson High School students Emma Martinis and Olivia Supp met with the West Jefferson Hills School Board in late January, they had a goal in mind.

The TJ juniors had been nominated for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Student of the Year program and their goal was, for their team “Team 4 THE CURE,” to raise $30,000 from early February until the April 1 deadline, a period of just seven weeks.

Darla Holmes is program coordinator for MPACT – Monessen Positive Action Community Team – an afterschool program for Monessen Middle School students that was implemented early in 2021.  The program is intended to improve student behavior and academic motivation, but Holmes figured the students needed a little more: so Sunday Fundays have been created at Christian Life Ministries Church in Monessen.

To build a better tomorrow that tackles challenges, pursues bold ideas, and opens the door to new possibilities for students, Remake Learning has awarded Clairton City School District funds from the second phase of Moonshot Grants.  These grants were awarded to nine schools and educational nonprofits in southwestern Pennsylvania and north-central West Virginia.
