A familiar theme will prevail when the eighth annual Coach Joe Howard Memorial Golf Outing is held Friday, June 14 at Uniontown Country Club. All proceeds from the outing, which is hosted by the Cal U Football Alumni and open to the public, will benefit the Coach Joe Howard Memorial Scholarship at California University.

James and Esther Howard-Pevarnik of Latrobe established the endowment from which scholarships are awarded annually to a sophomore, junior or senior football player at Cal U. Recipients must display athletic ability, academic excellence and strong moral development.

He was the defensive coordinator under head coach Chuck Findley in 1968 when Latrobe won the WPIAL Class AAA championship by defeating Kiski Area 19-7. He became head coach at GLHS in 1972 and died in 1977 while leading pre-season drills with his team.
