The Mid-Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame met in executive session at Peno’s Plaza on January 8. In attendance were general chairman Steve Russell, secretary Tom Jenkins, vice chairman Bill Kubin, and board members Richard Bucchianeri, Tom Evans, Paul Rach and Ed Repka.

The minutes from the October 9, 2012 meeting were approved along with the treasury report.
The 20th annual induction banquet for the Mid Mon Valley chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame is slated for The Willow Room in Rostraver Township on Friday, June 21. Nominations for the 2013 induction will be reviewed at the January 24 Selection Committee meeting. Other local Sports Hall of Fame banquets were announced for the following chapters: the Western Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, May 4 at the Sheraton North, Cranberry Township; the WPIAL Hall of Fame at the Radisson Doubletree in Greentree on Friday, June 7; the Washington-Greene County Sports Hall of Fame on Friday, June 14 at the Meadowlands Double Tree by Hilton; the Fayette County Sports Hall of Fame at Uniontown’s Penn State extension on Saturday, June 22.

The 2013 state banquet, 51st such event, will be held at the Holiday Inn East Harrisburg October 19 with local candidates on the state ballot including baseball greats Ron Necciai and Bruce DalCanton along with Governor John K. Tener.
Two local inductees, Sam Havrilak of Monessen and Dale Hamer of Fairhope, were inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in Cranberry Township at the Sheraton North on November 10, 2012. This brings the total of local Hall of Fame state inductees to 17.
The museum home of the Mid-Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame is located off Interstate 70 at the Bentleyville exit at the Best Western Garden Inn with extensive artifacts from Valley sports legends. The exhibit is open for public viewing 24 hours. One can view the website for the Hall of Fame at:

Acknowledged was the recent passing of Donora boxing great Lee Sala, a 2000 Hall of Fame inductee, who died at age 86 on December 3, 2012 in Florida. Sala was a memorable southpaw professional boxer who was a leading contender for the middleweight boxing title facing highly ranked fighters of the day. A career that spanned from 1946 to 1953 showed a record of 76 wins and 7 losses with 48 knockouts for the “Donora Destroyer.”

The next board of directors meeting is scheduled for April 9, 2013.
