Seniors

Several partner agencies of United Way’s Open Your Heart to a Senior initiative need volunteers for various programs:

• The Snow Angels program has expanded to more than just snow shoveling and has launched Neighborly Gnomes, another neighborhood-based volunteer initiative operated by Family Services of Western Pennsylvania’s In Service of Seniors: Pittsburgh program. The initiative was created as a response to the desire of Snow Angels volunteers to continue serving seniors and adults with disabilities in their neighborhood throughout the spring, summer and fall.

Neighborly Gnomes provides assistance with outdoor tasks such as gardening, raking leaves, trimming hedges and taking out the trash. Services are offered to any senior or adult with a physical disability living in Allegheny County. For more information and to volunteer, visit NeedsByNeighborhood.org.

• Volunteers in all Allegheny County communities are needed to transport seniors to medical appointments or shopping during the day in the volunteer’s own vehicle. This is the most requested service by seniors. For more information about these and other needs, please call the United Way helpline at 2-1-1 or email openyourheart@uwac.org.

Please register to attend an upcoming information session. For more information about OYHS, call the United Way helpline at 2-1-1, email openyourheart@uwac.org, or visit www.oyhs.org.
