Elizabeth Forward Middle School students participated in a service learning project called the "Coloring Our Communities" crayon project.

Students participated in a crayon collection for kids at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Crayons were collected from schools, libraries, restaurants, families, and community partnerships. Students sorted and melted new crayons and when completed, they were packaged and delivered to the hospital.
“Coloring Our Communities” creates environmental waste awareness for students. Millions of crayons are thrown away every year into landfills, but it takes decades for these same crayons to disintegrate. While students are learning about reducing waste, they are also learning about philanthropy. The crayons provided hospitalized children with art therapy to engage their creativity and take away the focus of their illness or injury.
Students also learned about manufacturing and producing a product that gives back to the community. The crayon collection is a great multi-disciplinary project that engaged students of all ages in our district.
