Several students in the gifted program as well as other students looking to pursue a career in the medical field had the unique opportunity to view a live open-heart surgery on January 29 at Allegheny General Hospital.

TJ students view heart surgery

Thomas Jefferson High School is one of many local schools that partners with Allegheny General Hospital's Cardiovascular Institute (CVI) to give students a first-hand look into the operating room. During surgery, CVI Program Assistant Coordinator Lindsey Zern joins the students and their teachers in the observation area to explain what is happening during the surgery. Students have observed surgeries such as coronary artery bypass, heart valve replacement and aneurysm repair. Following surgery, the surgeon will often meet with the students to discuss the operation and to answer questions.
