Kids were asked to decorate stars with veterans’ names on them so that they can be hung on the walls of each building within the district. There are 2,479 students within the district, and there are at least 100 stars hung in the middle school with an anticipated 800 stars total to be hung in all buildings in the district.
The ceremony consisted of music from the 7th and 8th grade symphonic band, 7th and 8th grade strings orchestra, 7th and 8th grade chorus, snare drum, readings and the playing of “Taps.” Guest speakers included Blaine Hill VFW Post 7632, American Legion Post 553, Magistrate District Judge Beth Scagline Mills, Captain Rick Elster LCDR, and Captain Joseph Ladistic. There was a Patriots Pen essay contest and the winners were announced. For first place, Natalie A. Brogna won the award, in second place was Natalie G. Glessner, and in third place was Anna M. Resnik. Lastly, there was a video shown, paying respects to the veterans who have passed.
Mrs., Trisha Martell, principal of the middle school, and Ms. Natalie Meelieb, counselor at the middle school, say they chose this patriotic holiday to celebrate with the kids because the kids do not have this day off every year, as opposed to Memorial or Labor Day.
This year, 50 guests attended, and 25 were veterans.
