It’s our favorite time of year again— The Southwestern Pennsylvania (SWPA) Science Bowl is now open for registration! This science bowl is one of 67 regional competitions sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy across the country.
Does your school have a group of science and math whizzes buzzing to show off their knowhow? Then pull together a team of 5—4 members and an alternate—and coach them to answer questions with speed and precision. Registration is only $50 per team, and your team could be the next to represent the region at the prestigious National Science Bowl this spring in Washington, D.C. Participants receive a Science Bowl t-shirt and backpack, continental breakfast, lunch, and other team items.
Please visit our webpage, http://swpasciencebowl.com/, and click on the “registration” link for more information and to register your team. Our “coaches and competitors” link has a video to explain competition format, as well as some sample questions and other resources.
The high school preliminary rounds will be held February 20, 2016, and the middle school preliminary rounds will be held February 27, all at the Community College of Allegheny County’s South Campus.
The final rounds will be held on March 2 at the National Energy Technology Laboratory’s site in South Park, PA. The winning regional school not only receives an expense-paid trip to the national competition but also some fabulous team and individual prizes.
Also, as part of our 25th anniversary celebration, we would like to get in touch with any previous members of SWPA Science Bowl teams. Please have SWPA Science Bowl alumni contact us at: education.outreach@netl.doe.gov.
2016 will be the 25th year of this amazing competition, and we would love to see some new faces along with all our old favorites. We have many amazing things planned for this year’s competitions. We hope to see you there!
