Mrs. Wendy Parzich - Third Grade Teacher, Ringgold Elementary North

My parents recently moved to State College, PA but still like to get the Pittsburgh Sunday paper, as they spent most of their lives in the South Hills. My dad showed me this poem by Duane Michals, artist extraordinaire.

Golden Triangle
A corner tribute to Mr. Michals created by students

Hooray for Pittsburgh

Sometimes in a morning mist,

I see a shimmering city,

With more hills than Rome,

More bridges than Venice,

More rivers than Paris,

And through a tunnel suddenly,

More towers than Oz,

What a splendid spectacle!

By Duane Michals

I thought this was the best poem about Pittsburgh and decided to share it with my third grade students. With the help of our wonderful art teacher, Mr. Gilpin, who created the "vision" I had for the Golden Triangle, my students created a corner tribute to Mr. Michals in our hallway. He is an inspiration, and we thank him for his cultural gifts.

Duane Michals is a photographer, poet, filmmaker, and artist. He is in his ninth decade and was originally from McKeesport. The article about him was from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on January 18, 2015.
