In an effort to raise money to help combat ALS, McClellan Elementary School took part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, with all proceeds going to a local family battling the disease.

Students brought donations into school on September 3 and September 4 and dropped off the funds into the bucket of the teacher they wanted to get "challenged". The teacher who raised the most money was the one who got ice water dumped on his or her head on September 5. All others received a bucket filled with Styrofoam peanuts.

According to the ALS Association, "ALS, often referred to as 'Lou Gehrig's Disease,' is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord."

McClellan's official tally came to $1,700 raised in two days, with two teachers tying for the top spot. Therefore, it was decided that both Lisa Marcheleta and Melissa Wahl would get ice water dumped on their heads. In addition, Kelly Hartbauer received an entire cooler filled with ice for putting money from her bucket into other buckets.

The money was donated to the Onyshko family to help Matt Onyshko and his family fights the disease. Matt Onyshko is a local resident of the area and a seven-year member of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire.

McClellan Elementary and the entire West Jefferson Hills School District family would like to wish the Onyshko family the best of luck as they battle ALS.
